Editing for no scrubs music video

      About two days after my group and I finished filming, we started editing. The first step for editing was to put the scenes in order. We thought the story would be best told if the car scenes were in the beginning. While editing I wanted to make sure that the clips flowed smoothly together. In the car scene I thought a special detail would be to make sure that the song no scrubs was seen playing on the radio. For those car scenes, I had to edit the lighting in a few of the shots. Sometimes while filming it could get tricky to make sure there were no shadows. Since this was kind of hard to perfect, I figured I’d fix it in the editing process. I used the saturation, brightness, and contrast settings to fix the way the lighting looked. In the end all of the car scenes were how my group and I envisioned lighting wise.
      To transition into the next part of the music video, a zoom effect was added over the clip of me turning up the radio. The reason my groupmates and I decided to do this was to show that we were going into this song. After the focus was zoomed in onto the radio screen, it zoom back out on the blue sky at the beach setting. From then on, the Settings would change from the mall to the beach. For the chorus of the song the video consisted of the three characters doing a choreographed dance at the beach setting and the shopping mall setting. While doing the dance separate clips would play that switched between the settings. For example, while one move would start at the beach the next would transition into the other dance move at the mall setting. I did this using an action match to make sure all of the dance moves aligned perfectly. Luckily for this part of the music video, the lighting and saturation did not need to be adjusted. Overall, I feel the transitions between these two settings for the chorus of the song blended well.
      For the parts of the music video where we are in the shopping mall, there were a few scenes that required tedious editing.For example, in one of the scenes a character is seen trying on a jacket at a store. As she is trying on the jacket she calls over her friend. The friend then tells her to hold on and goes behind a wall. The idea for this clip of the music video is that when the character goes behind the wall she reappears in the same outfit as her friend. Of course this cannot be shot perfectly in real life so it would need some editing. So I took the scene of the character calling her friend over and the friend going on the other side of the wall, and put the clip of her already in the new outfit reappearing together. While editing this I had to make sure the camera stayed in the same position and the tilts or angles of the videos were exactly the same. we also had to make sure that the lighting and colors in the shots did not change in a drastic way. Overall, the editing process takes a lot of time and effort. however, it is very rewarding when the music video starts to come together. The editing is what truly makes the footage come to life as well as tells the story you envisioned.
